If summer were a physical place, I’d have to be dragged out of it every August, kicking, screaming and cursing. I fight with the end of summer every year and though Labor Day doesn’t technically mark the close of the season, something about the month of September just reeks of the death of all things lush and green.
Never have I ever been excited for the Fall. Labor Day always hurt my feelings, disguising itself as a summer holiday when in reality it was ushering in autumn.
Autumn noun ˈȯ-təm : The season between summer and winter. The time of year when everything but my existentialism begins to die. And little voices in my head live to negate my self-worth.
I call it my DownFall (because I’m a word nerd and I love a good pun). To combat my sadness, I’ve preemptively made a list of things I am looking forward to as everything on this side of the equator is laid to rest for the next few months.
- Gaining some clarity, peace, and direction through my September fast.
- Pumpkin spice lattes (once september is over)
- My fall wardrobe aesthetic this year: leaves. Lots of yellows, reds, and oranges.
- Making a leaf crown (similar to the flower crown but you know, leafy. (see #2)
- Straightening my hair for the first time in nearly two years
- Huge scarves
- Darker shades of lipstick
- Crisp air
- Cerulean skies
- Sweat pants/ hoodie life
- The slow death of all insects
- Walking through the woods full of bare trees and being able to see through the woods
- All black everything, because, you know, I’ll be in mourning.
Okay, Labor Day, this year, no tantrums. This year, I come in peace. Goodbye Summer, I love you always.
